SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC FORUM - "Social Democratic Thoughts on Artificial Intelligence” - A ZOOM event

Dear Friend: This talk by Professor James “J” Hughes PhD explores four aspects of (Artificial Intelligence (AI's) relationship to social democracy, (1) AI's impacts on inequality and politics, (2) the social democratic approach to regulating AI emerging from the EU, (3) social democratic responses to technological unemployment such as a universal basic income, and (4) possible applications of AI to taxation, regulation and planning. Regarding our guest speaker - Professor James "J." Hughes PhD joined the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee in 1980, and has served the Democratic Socialists of America in many capacities since that time. More recently, he has been on the Steering Committee of the DSA North Star Caucus. He serves as Associate Provost at the University of Massachusetts Boston, and as Executive Director of the techno progressive thinktank, the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies, which he founded with Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom. He holds a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Chicago and is the author of the book Citizen Cyborg. He has long been an advocate for universal basic income.
